About The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946)

The Strange Love of Martha Ivers is a 1946 American noir tragedy film starring Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, and Lizabeth Scott, with Kirk Douglas appearing in his film debut. It was directed by Lewis Milestone based on a screenplay by Robert Rossen, adapted from the short story "Love Lies Bleeding" by playwright John Patrick.

On a rainy night in 1928 in the Pennsylvania factory town of Iverstown, thirteen-year-old Martha Ivers tries to run away from her wealthy aunt and guardian, Mrs. Ivers, with her street-smart friend, Sam Masterson. She is caught and taken home. Seeking to ingratiate his son with Mrs. Ivers, Martha's tutor, Walter O'Neil Sr., presents timid Walter Jr., as the one responsible for Martha's capture. Walter privately tells Martha that despite what his father said, he was not the one who put authorities on her track, and would never betray her.
