About Silver Screen

Silver Screen is the channel for the films that shaped cinema itself. It concentrates on the silent era and the early sound years, from D. W. Griffith's Intolerance (1916) through the great European and Hollywood masterpieces of the 1920s to golden-age dramas of the 1930s and beyond. These are the movies film schools still teach and critics still argue about.

The prime-time line-up is a short course in film history: Fritz Lang's Metropolis, F. W. Murnau's Sunrise, Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin, Carl Theodor Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc, Cecil B. DeMille's original The Ten Commandments and the 1937 Technicolor A Star Is Born. Many of our silent features air with a public-domain (CC0) piano score so they can be enjoyed the way audiences first saw them, with live-style accompaniment.

If you are new to silent film, Silver Screen is a good place to start: pick a headliner, read its background page for context, and give it ten minutes. Every title here is public domain in the U.S. or openly licensed, with the evidence listed on its page.
