About Project Mercury: Mercury-Redstone 1 Launch (1960)

Project Mercury (1958-63) was America's first human spaceflight program, which put Alan Shepard, John Glenn and four other astronauts into space in one-person capsules. NASA documented every phase on film; as U.S. government works these films are in the public domain.

This 15-minute video shows the extensive testing procedures applied to the Mercury spacecraft before rollout. It also shows the rollout, launch attempts, and the final launch. A failed launch occurred on November 21, 1960 due to an electrical malfunction, but Mercury-Redstone 1A was launched successfully on December 17, 1960.
