About The Little Match Girl (1928)
The Little Match Girl (La petite marchande d'allumettes) is a 1928 French silent featurette directed by Jean Renoir, made with Jean Tedesco at the Vieux-Colombier, from Hans Christian Andersen's 1845 tale. Catherine Hessling plays Karen, who tries to sell matches on a freezing New Year's Eve and, sheltering in a corner, dreams herself into a shop window's toyland, where a toy soldier and a figure of Death chase her through the clouds. This copy has the original French intertitles. It airs on Starlite TV's Silent Pictures channel (CH 12).
