About Saturday Morning

Saturday Morning is a 24-hour cartoon channel built around the first golden age of animation. It begins with Winsor McCay's Gertie the Dinosaur (1914), one of the earliest animated character films, and runs through the late 1920s and 1930s, when Disney, the Fleischer brothers and other studios turned cartoons into a mass entertainment with synchronised sound and music.

Headliners include Steamboat Willie (1928), the cartoon that made Mickey Mouse a star; Disney's eerie Silly Symphony The Skeleton Dance (1929); the Fleischers' two-reel Technicolor special Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor (1936); and the Fleischer Superman cartoons of the early 1940s, celebrated for their lavish art-deco animation. The channel also airs the modern open movie Big Buck Bunny (2008). Headline cartoons air in the mornings and late afternoons, Pacific time.

Some very old cartoons reflect the attitudes and humour of their era, so a few gags may feel dated. Every cartoon is public domain in the U.S. or openly licensed, with evidence on its page.
